Illini Wrestlers Dominate Central Missouri State, 51-0

Sophomore heavyweight Mike Behnke recorded the fastest fall of the day in 1:06 as the Illini routed Central Missouri State.

The third-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team dominated Central Missouri State in the team's first dual of the season, winning all 10 matches for a 51-0 final score. The Illini didn't allow a Mule takedown all match and saw four pins and four technical falls, as the team improved to 1-0 on the season. The 51 points were the third-most scored in a dual meet in school history.

The match began just after 1 p.m., as the team honored former Illini and current Capt. Jonathan Vaughn of the U.S. Marine Corp., who earned a Purple Heart after being injured during battle in Iraq. Following the presentation, it took Illinois just one hour and seven minutes to dismantle the Mules of CMSU.

Junior Pete Friedl (Orland Park, Ill.) began the dual at 174 pounds with a dominating 13-3 major decision of Jesse Sheets, one of only three bouts to make it to the third period. The scoring spree began to pick up speed at 184 with senior Brian Glynn's (Orland Park, Ill.) 17-1 technical fall over Kevin Grece, which included nine points off near falls and ended at the 4:32 mark of the match. At 197 pounds, Tyrone Byrd (Jr., Clinton, Ill.) wrestled a tight match with Dan Moore, which ended in a 6-1 decision to give the Illini a 12-0 after three bouts.

In the next three matches, the Illini used a total of 4:04 on the mat to pin wrestlers at heavyweight, 125 and 133 pounds. Sophomore Mike Behnke (Villa Park, Ill.) and junior Kyle Ott (Huber Heights, Ohio) showed no signs of rust as they wrestled in their first matches of the season, coming off minor injuries. Behnke pinned Ryan Bowen in 1:06, after getting a takedown just 52 seconds into the first period. Ott also led 2-0 when he worked for about 58 seconds on a pin, which ended in just 1:12, over Omar Padilla. Senior Mark Jayne (Elyria, Ohio) struck first at 1:45, then needed only 29 seconds to get the call for a 1:46 fall. The Illini then led 30-0.

The following trio of Illini grapplers, Michael Martin (Norfolk, Va.), Anton Dietzen (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Alex Tirapelle,(Clovis, Calif.) scored a total of 63 points in their matches, which resulted in technical falls. At 141, Martin scored eight takedowns in his win over Will Gerber and led 20-5 when the match was called at the 5:36 mark. Dietzen racked up 11 near fall points in his 22-4 clobbering of Vince Bertucci at 149 pounds, which stopped with four seconds left in the second period. Tirapelle put up 21 points on Jesse Zeugin and won by a 21-4 final at the 4:47 mark at 157. Sophomore Donny Reynolds (Frankfort, Ill.) led 4-1 before he got Justin Cooper on his back for a fall in 2:21 at 165 pounds.

The Illini return to action after the Christmas break when they head to Chicago for the 42nd Annual Midlands Classic Tournament on Dec. 29-30. Illinois will look to defend their Midlands title against a loaded field of ranked collegiate teams and individuals as well as invited post-graduate wrestlers.
